The Pink Lake: Lake Rose

Lake Rose or Retba  Senegal, Dakar

Lake Retba, or as the French refer to it Lac Rose  is a true natural phenomenon that lies north of the Cap Verde peninsula of Senegal, 30 km from Dakar, Africa.

According to experts, the pink waters caused by Dunaliella salina is a type of  harmless halophilic green micro-algae (CYANOBACTERIA) bacteria especially found in sea salt fields in the water.

If the color were not magical and stunning enough to make you smile, it should be known that Lake Retba has a high salt content, much like that of the Dead Sea, allowing people to float effortlessly in the massive pink water. In fact, Lake Retba has an almost one and a half times higher salt content than the Dead Sea.

Color of the lake varies from light pink to brown. The intensity of color depends on the time of the day (from the angle of incidence of sunlight), from the clouds, and especially from the wind, because a strong wind cyanobacteria is activated and begins to produce more pigment.

Tour to Pink Lake - an integral part of all the tourist routes. In the Pink Lake, as in the Dead Sea, it is impossible to sink. You can safely lie on the surface of the water, reading a magazine.
Lake Retba is often the finishing point of the famous Paris - Dakar Rally.

Salt is mined in the Pink Lake, and white salt pyramid whimsically fram its shores.
